Situated along the Potomac river next to the birthplaces of George Washington, Robert E. Lee and James Monroe, Colonial Beach prospered as farmland for the landed gentry during the 1700s.

By the late 1800s, the lure of beaches and waterfront property started a building boom of large Victorian houses and quaint hotels. The town's most distinguished resident, Alexander Graham Bell, had a Potomac waterfront home here. Growth continued as many discovered that the "The Beach" was a delightful summer retreat. The Town of Colonial Beach was incorporated in 1892. It has withstood many changes, but it's mixture of history and outdoor activities has always made it a favorite getaway for city dwellers.

Today the town has been experiencing another surge of growth as more and more people are discovering that Colonial Beach is a convenient resort area. The summer weekends are packed with events from parades to jet ski competitions. The rest of the year the beach hosts everything from art festivals to big band dances to fishing tournaments. Just 90 minutes from Washington, DC and Richmond, it’s the perfect family or romantic get away. Come and discover all that Colonial Beach has to offer!
